3. Career Opportunities and Licensing Requirements for Estheticians
💼 How Much Can Estheticians Earn?
Licensed estheticians in North Carolina and across the U.S. earn between $60,000 to $80,000+ per year depending on experience, location, and services offered. Many earn even more through:
- Facial and nail specialists in Raleigh: $25–$45/hour or more with the right skills. Salons, spas, and med spas are actively hiring – some students even launch their own businesses after graduating!
- Additional income opportunities: Tips and retail commissions
- High-demand services: Facials, lashes, and sculpting
- Running your own business: Home studio or mobile spa
- Freelancing: Weddings, events, and photoshoots
After you get licensed, you can work in:
- Salons and day spas
- Medspas and wellness centers
- Beauty counters like Ulta or Sephora
- Cruise ships and luxury resorts
- Or even start your own beauty business
❌ Can You Work Without a License?
No — in North Carolina and most U.S. states, you are not legally allowed to perform facials, waxing, lash extensions, or any skincare services without a license from the state board.
Working without a license can result in:
- Fines or legal action
- Your business being shut down
- No insurance coverage for accidents or claims
- Difficulty getting hired by professional spas or salons
A: No. In North Carolina, it is illegal to perform skincare services like facials, lash extensions, waxing, or body treatments without a license from the NC Cosmetic Arts Board.
A: You could be fined, reported, or shut down. Most insurance companies won’t cover accidents or claims if you are unlicensed — and most professional spas will not hire you.
A: You need a North Carolina Esthetician License, which you earn by completing a 600-hour approved program (like ours at 5T) and passing two exams: the Theory Exam and the Practical Exam.
A: Yes! We are a licensed and state-approved school. Our esthetic program prepares you to confidently pass both exams — and we offer mock testing, one-on-one coaching, and state board setup training.
A: A license proves you’re trained, professional, and legally allowed to work. You’ll gain more trust from clients, access to better jobs, and the ability to build a long-term beauty career.
To become a licensed esthetician in NC, you must:
-
Complete a 600-hour esthetics program at an approved school (like 5T)
-
Pass the Theory Exam (written test)
-
Pass the Practical Exam (hands-on demonstration)
Once you pass both, you’ll receive your NC Esthetic License and can start working legally.
At 5T, our 600-hour program includes:
-
Theory (science, safety, state laws, and skin knowledge)
-
Hands-on training (facials, waxing, makeup, lashes, machines, and more)
-
State board exam preparation (mock exams + coaching)
Yes. As soon as you complete the 600 hours and meet graduation requirements, 5T will certify you so you can register with the NC State Board and take both exams.
That depends on your schedule:
-
Full-Time Program: 16 weeks
-
Part-Time Program: 22 weeks
Both include flexible online theory hours to fit your lifestyle.
Not when you train at 5T! Our students have a very high pass rate because we:
-
Teach you step-by-step what to expect
-
Offer mock theory and practical tests
-
Give you confidence through practice and support

⏳ Attendance Policy for Flexible Schedule
At 5T Beauty Academy, we offer flexible schedules so students can learn while balancing work, family, and personal life. However, flexibility also comes with accountability.
To make sure every student stays on track to graduate on time and qualify for the state board exams, we:
✅ Review your attendance and total hours every 2 weeks
✅ Expect students to meet their weekly hour goals
✅ Offer optional makeup hours on Saturday (Full-Time) or early-day access (Part-Time)
💰 Missed Hours Policy
If a student does not meet their required hours during the evaluation period, we will add a charge to cover extra teacher time and facility use.
Each missed hour = $16/hour added to your balance
📌 Example:
Let’s say a student is expected to complete 76 hours in 2 weeks, but only completes 66 hours.
❌ Hours missed: 10 hours
💳 Extra charge: 10 hours × $16 = $160 added to student’s account
🙌 We’re Here to Help You Stay on Track!
We want every student to succeed. That’s why:
You’ll always know your hour goals
You’ll get support from teachers if you fall behind
We’ll help you schedule makeup hours before any late fees are added
A: We offer two flexible options so you can train even if you have a full-time job or family responsibilities:
Program | Days & Times | Duration |
---|---|---|
Full-Time | Mon–Fri, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM | 16 weeks |
Part-Time | Mon–Wed (5:30 PM–9:30 PM) + Sat (9 AM–5 PM) | 22 weeks |
A: Yes! Our esthetics program includes hybrid learning. You’ll complete:
👩💻 Theory online with guided support
🙌 Hands-on practice in person at our campus
This helps you learn at your pace while still getting live training!
A: You’ll study the theory lessons (like skin analysis, ingredients, infection control) online through videos and quizzes, and then come to school to practice on real models using machines and tools.
A: 100%! Our students who do hybrid training pass their exams just as well — or better — than full in-person programs because we combine:
Expert-led live demos
Step-by-step mock exams
Extra review and coaching when needed
A: Yes! Many of our students work part-time or have family responsibilities. That’s why we built hybrid flexibility into both programs — so you can learn without pausing your life
